Singapore TLA

Sustainable Singapore
Singapore’s public housing is launching its first eco-town, in Punggol.
10 households in the block of flats will participate in this program, in collaboration with Panasonic to help families reduce their carbon footprint and utilities bill.
Energy-producing solar panels will be fitted on the block of flats and these will power lifts and lighting during the day.Excess electricity generated by the solar panels can be stored in batteries, which households can tap on for energy at night.
every step that we do right today, will make it a little better tomorrow.

the Singapore Formula1 is the series’ only night race – starting at 8 p.m. – although the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix starts late afternoon and finishes in the evening. But the Singapore race takes place on a street circuit on which it is difficult to overtake: It is bumpy, dusty, relatively narrow, and run under spotlights.
it was Sebastian Vettel’s 19th career victory, and his first in Singapore. in fact Vettel was practically cruising into 1st place. He is just behind the WORLD’s title by 1 point.
look forward to the next F1 in Singapore. its looking promising that the F1 contract would be renewed again next year.

Singapore’s Independent BookStore series.  #4
i love walking into these Singapore bookstores and just soaking in the vibes. In fact the indie stores are quirky, quiet, artsy and well designed.
# 3 The Pigeohole
one of the newer faces and has a really interesting personality. Ironically it can’t be pigeonholed into anything specific. It’s sometimes a cafe, sometimes a bar-open mic space, sometimes a bookstore. Nice chill-out vibe about it.

i’ve always loved Dick Lee.
to me he is one of Singapore’s greatest assets – a true renaissance man.
Dick Lee recently had a sell out concert, The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman, based on his bestselling autobiography. This fabulous show was such a roaring success that they’re bringing it back for a two‐night only run from 14‐15 October, at the DBS Arts Centre.
a couple of things I learned about him that I didn’t know before!
Did u know that
- as a teenager, Dick’s business acumen – selling porn magazines to teenage boys at SJI (St Joseph’s Institution) ‐ almost got him caned and booted out of school.
- that Dick was classically trained by the knuckle‐rapping Mrs Toehill. Abuse however, has its benefits, turning the young Dick into Singapore’s best‐known musician.
- that he is first cousins with actors Lim Kay Siu and Lim Kay Tong.
- and that apart from music, Dick has led an illustrious career as a fashion designer.
You could almost do a Dick Lee edition of Trivial Pursuit!
To catch more Dick Lee trivia watch The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman, based on his bestselling autobiography.

The 24th Singapore Film Festival is currently showing until the end of the week. i saw two films with similar themes.
Both films had an odd mix of beauty and pain; all at the same time. It was intense. Too intense for a Monday night and a Sunday afternoon.
The same thing happens at the Film Fest year after year. U buy tickets weeks in advance, and u forget all about them. Then its Monday night. And after a disaster day in the office, u remember ur film fest tickets. U do a mad rush to the theatre. Ur sitting there in the dark and ur watching an obscure film that makes u cry or ur mind explode. Yeap. That’s about right.
So Sunday I rushed to the Arts House to catch the “Floating Lives”, a beautiful Vietnamese film with breathtaking scenery of the Mekong River. Despite the beautiful cinematography, the prevailing storyline was about Cruelty - from the opening shot of a female lynch mob to bird flu mass culling of ducks. The film made everyone in the theatre cry. Really, literally cry. I know because I checked.
Last night after squeezing in a 10 minute dinner, I rushed to the theatre to catch “Pina”. This acclaimed 3D documentary was about dance choreographer Pina Bausch who died two days before filming started - just five days after being diagnosed with cancer. The film was beautifully shot in 3D, with theatrical imagery and music that was intoxicating. But her choreography was so angry and dangerous that the performers seemed quite literally at risk of damaging themselves. It made people uncomfortable, some left the theatre - and it made my mind explode. But it was definitely an incredible film i will not forget for a very long time.

so how expensive is parking in Singapore?
the latest Global Index by Coliers reveals that Singapore at $225 parking fee per month, was not within the Top 50 but closer to the Top 100 in the world. (Singapore did not make it in this chart at parking rates of $225/mth, but u get the idea).
Several factors drive parking rates high in central business districts. First, the lack of space puts pressures on the availability of parking slots. Providing parking space is thus expensive. Second, demand for parking space is higher in central areas with financial cities having higher parking rates than other cities, in part because of a larger pool of drivers able to afford personal parking spaces.
Don’t bother driving to work in London.

Singapore’s Independent BookStore series. #1
i love social media and blogs are my trusted source of information for most things. i’ve cancelled all paper magazine subscriptions and have adopted instead the IPAD version, cheaper, greener and last longer. whilst I get faster access to information i still love the smell and touch of books. To slow down and thumb real paper instead of scrolling a screen. That’s why i love walking into these Singapore bookstores and just soaking in the vibes. In fact the indie stores are more quirky, quiet, artsy and well designed.

this is part of the Independent Bookstore series  # 1 “Books Actually”
one of the pioneers, ”Books Actually” is an independent bookshop specializing in fictional and local literature.

About

Singapore - the perfect example of a city that holds all the possibilities of creating a beautiful vision. T.L.A means Three Letter Acronym - it's a little known quirk here, where everything around you is reduced to a three letter acronym. Ask for directions in Singapore, and they might tell you to take the CTE along PIE to avoid ERP at the ECP. Or, just take MRT near the HDB. TLA also means Travel, Lifestyle and Arts; appreciated by many in Singapore - but second only to, food.
